Lit Drops in VAN
How are lit drops tagged in VAN?
- We added a “Lit Dropped” Canvass Result so VAN users have a more accurate way to track their volunteers’ canvassing activity. Previously, many campaigns would mark households where literature had been dropped as “Not Home,” or “Inaccessible.”
- There are two ways to tag lit drops in VAN. The first is as a Contact Type and the second is as a Canvass Result. We recommend tagging lit drops as a Canvass Result, and setting your Contact Type as Walk. Each campaign is welcome to handle this however they would like, but this tends to work better for setting up distributed canvassed.
- Tagging lit drops inconsistently creates difficulties when attempting to exclude already lit dropped households from future lists or when viewing your Canvass Results.
Using the “Lit Drop” Canvass Result
How do I set up my Scripts and MiniVAN Campaigns for lit drops?
- First, you'll want to update your scripts to ensure that Lit Dropped is available as a Canvass Result
- We have an example script for you to use as a reference, but please see our document here on creating scripts for additional guidance. We recommend that including the survey questions for Dem Support ID & Vote Method.
- Make sure and triple check that Lit Dropped is selected as a Walk Canvass Result in the panel on the right hand side!
Set up a MiniVAN Campaign
- Create a MiniVAN format that includes the information you want displayed in the Canvassers MiniVAN (at minimum: include Name, Phone Number, Address)
- Tip: You can also just use the Default MiniVAN Format if you don't want anything crazy
- Select the Walk MiniVAN Format you created
- Set Contact Type Walk
- Select the Lit Drop script you created
- Enable Auto-Sync
- Create a saved search, being sure to exclude “Canvass Status: Lit Dropped,” and follow the normal process for cutting and assigning out turfs.
