What is a script?

  • A script defines the dialogue a volunteer has with a voter when they are at the door or talking on the phone with voters

  • Scripts include dialogue text and survey questions

    • Survey questions allow the results of a phone bank or a block walk to be tracked (e.g., Do you support X for congress?)

  • You can either use a pre-made TDP script or customize your own script

When do you use a script?

  • Scripts are used by volunteers when doing outreach to voters

    • They are used in VAN voter contact tools, including virtual phone banks and MiniVan Canvass

What scripts already exist for?

  • TDP has created scripts for your use, that incorporate survey questions, and the latest scripts can be found at 2024 TDP Scripts

  • These scripts are recommended for County Parties and anyone who want to do general Democratic identification amongst different groups

  • These are not for candidate campaign who are trying to identify support for a specific candidate—if that is the case, please see below to create scripts

Why would I want to create my own script?

  • If you would like to create a script that highlights a certain characteristic of your candidate or policy / legislation that is important in your region, then we recommend you take one of our existing scripts and modify it for your own candidate on VAN

How do I customize an existing script?

  • You will begin on the home page of VAN and type in “Scripts” in your search bar. You will be taken to a an area where you can create and view created scripts (only scripts where your committee is the Owner committee will be here) for you to use.

  • You can use our TDP script language as needed: http://txdem.co/script-language  After scripts are created, you can use them as a template for future scripts. Here are the steps to Add New Script or An Existing one

  • Once you have selected the script that you would like to use, you will then look towards the top right section of your page and hit “Save As”, give it a new name and hit “save”.

  •  You will now have a new script and you will be able to start editing and adding text as you please.

  •  Once you have completed your modification, scroll up and hit “save”. You will now have your newly created script ready for use !

How do I add survey questions to a script?

  • In order to add a survey question to a script, you will scroll down the “add script element” section of your script page.

  • You will then click on the survey question that you would like to add to your script and hit “add”.

  • Once added, you will have the ability to drag and drop the question to any part of the “linear script preview” section by clicking on the 3 lines next to the survey questions.

  • Once you are done editing and adding survey questions, you will then scroll down to the bottom of the “Linear Script Preview” section of your page and hit “save”.
